nikol41
http://www.thornberry-animal-sanctuary.org/

Thornberry animal sanctuary near Sheffield, UK will close down within
one
month if funds are not raised quickly. The sanctuary has a no-kill
policy
and also displays a lot of AR literature (SHAC, VIVA, HSA etc) in their
reception. They have been rescuing horses, pigs, cats, dogs, rabbits,
birds
and many other animals from abandonment and abusive situations since
1988.
They are one of the largest and best sanctuaries in the North of
England and
it will be very bad if they close down. If anyone can help them in any
way
please get in touch with them. There are much more details on their web
site

I got this from Lj animal_rights....

From the Peta website:
http://www.peta.org/alert/Automation/AlertItem.asp?id=1388&int=weekly_enews

"Please forward widely.

Last year, Steven Richard Schatz, 38, of 9701 Longview Dr., Ellicott City, was charged with felony cruelty to animals stemming from his alleged systematic April 2004 beatings and sodomy of his then-girlfriend's cat, Clyde. According to court records, Clyde was found suffering from blunt-force traumas on numerous occasions that month, including severe ocular hemorrhages, liver trauma, and seven broken ribs. Clyde's rectal muscles were also found to be flaccid, consistent with his having been sodomized. A digital recorder placed in his guardian's home later reportedly captured Clyde rhythmically screaming in obvious agony and Schatz yelling at the animal. Three months later, Clyde had to be euthanized because of his injuries.

On May 27, The Baltimore Sun reported that Schatz had been convicted of the charges and faced three years in prison.

Despite prosecutors' reported request that Schatz be given 18 months in jail, Judge Neil Axel instead apparently sent the felonious animal abuser to jail for just 90 days. Handcuffed and being led out of the courtroom, Schatz allegedly told the cat's guardian, "This is going to come back to you, in some way or form."

Please let Judge Axel hear from you. Inform him that further crimes are the rule rather than the exception among animal abusers and that this is especially true among so-called "zoophiles". Politely suggest that His Honor's decision may well have jeopardized the safety of the community at large and its animals."

It is imperative that all correspondence be dignified and polite, or our campaign will suffer:

The Honorable Neil Edward Axel
Associate Judge of District Court, Howard County
3451 Courthouse Dr.
Ellicott City, MD 21043
410-480-7701 (fax)

I personally LOVE Great Danes. There are few happier sights than a dog the size of a small pony wriggling around on its back with all four paws in the air and thumping its tail on the floor.

Please help Bruce the Great Dane pay for lifesaving heartworm treatment. (Or rather, please help his rescuers pay for the treatment...!)Otherwise the world will be down one Great Dane, and I think many of you will agree with me that we do NOT want that...

starting a shelter [20 Oct 2004|03:01am]

[ mood | determined ]

Hey, I just joined. I thought the people in this community would appreciate my recent lj post:

I'm going to start a no-kill animal shelter. I don't care how many loans I have to take out and how many people I have to hire. I'll do fundraising with all the free time I have. I don't care what it takes. I can't stand the thought of animals being abused, abandoned, left to die, or euthanized at shitty shelters because they don't have enough room, or because the animal is "unadoptable." Every animal is adoptable, but you have to find the right people. There ARE people out there who will take disabled animals, and there ARE people out there who have the patience to train and love an angry animal. These shelters just aren't looking hard enough.

But I can't do this all on my own. I need help, and lots of it. Please, if you can help an any way, even hook me up with some connection you have, let me know. This is what I will need:

1) Someone to help me get it started with a website. I need to advertise as much as I can so I can get more volunteers.
2) People to help me with ideas for and execution of fundraising. I will need a lot of it. Just think, I'll need to lease a building, buy stuff for cages, phone service, collars and leashes, food... and all the other regular bills to pay.
3) A veterinarian who will do work for free or low prices. The animals I bring in will undoubtedly need veterinary care for any preexisting problems, and I will always spay/neuter animals adopted out, because lord knows I don't want MORE homeless animals.
4) Someone who knows something about buildings. I will need to lease a building to use as the shelter, obviously, and I know nothing about what to look for in a "good building" or anything like that.
5) People to help with construction. I'll need to build cages for the animals, of course, to keep them separated.
6) An attorney to guide me through the legal process. Someone who will do it pro-bono. I have to file for incorporation to get taxes exempted, and a bunch of other stuff.

Please please please give me any help you can. I have to do this, and I will. Maybe I'll be Michigan's youngest person to run a shelter.
Even if you have a thought running through your head like "Well, my uncle is a lawyer, but I doubt he would help," tell me. I'm pretty damn good at getting people to help for a worthy cause. So please, anything you can think of, I would really appreciate it.

I'm in Ypsilanti, MI and I'm hoping to have the shelter between here and Lansing.

Thanks.
~Sarah~

my boyfriend and i attended a graudation on a farm.
on the farm, there were mutiple cats, overcrowded chickens with missing feathers, and cows. meh.

most of the cats looked fairly decent, but this one looked miserable.
his eyes were nearly swollen shut, he was drooling, missing all bottom teeth, had snot coming out of his nose, et cetera.
this cat was in bad shape.

i'm an animal freak, and if i see an animal being mistreated, i spaz.

i told jerrick, "we need to take this cat home."
i cried, and freaked out.
"we can't just leave him here"
..the cat kept following us.

he said okay, so we put him in the car and drove off.
i'm sure the home owners assumed he was run over, if they even knew about him..
god, i hate poorly taken care of farm cats.
with intentions of taking him to the vet and nursing him back to health and giving him to the cat shelter or someone we knew.

well, it was late saturday and no vet was open.
we called all over, and eventually we got a hold of a local vet and brought him in on emergency.
we tried to call the cat shelter, see if they would take him.
they said no.
so we ended up taking the cat to the vet and taking financial responsibilty.

the cat was tested for fiv and feline leukemia.
leukemia came back negative
but the fiv came back positive.
so we had a choice to make.
we take him in, find him a home with no other cats, or put him down.

the latter was not an option.
and no one wants a broken cat unless they're a cat person.. and cat people already have cats..
so that didn't work.

so, after ten days, we brought him home.
he adjusted very well to the free range rabbit and the rabbit adjusted very well to him.
he also doesn't mind the rats.

he's very affectionate and is doing pretty well.
his one eye is still a little swollen and icky, but that's the worst of it.
he's happy as can be. he's CONSTANTLY purring.. gahh..

today we put soft paws on his claws, as he likes to sharpen his claws on our legs.
he doesn't seem to mind them at all.

i don't know why anyone would really care..
but it kind of fits the community =].

The full story can be found here:
http://www.abcactionnews.com/stories/2004/03/040318rabbits.shtml

A Plant City, Florida teacher killed two day-old rabbits in front of a class of students by bashing them with a shovel, this is after the students refused to bury the rabbits alive by request of the teacher. The students offered to take care of the rabbits, but the teacher said that she did not want to bottle-feed the baby bunnies. This teacher may only receive a letter of reprimand from the school board, and I just saw a news report where a school board official basically defended her actions as something that is necessary in farm work.

When Pigs Cry [27 Feb 2004|09:34am]

nikol41
http://www.vivausa.org/campaigns/pigs/whenpigscry.htm A Viva! investigation of U.S. farms has revealed shocking facts about how pigs are treated.
Most spend their lives crammed in disease-ridden, filthy indoor units. Viva! found sick pigs tossed into the aisles like trash to die; some were still alive but could not reach food or water. Others were already dead and rotting. One pathetically sick pig died in front of our video camera. There was nothing we could do to save him. These were not isolated incidents. Time magazine reported that on the farms of one huge producer, 420,000 pigs died prematurely in a single year. These losses are built into the economics of pig farming.
Why does it happen? For years there has been a steady intensification of pig farming. Now, large industrial units are the norm. Pigs are commodities. To make them grow faster, they are given growth-promoting antibiotics on a daily basis. Many of these drugs are banned in the EU because of their role in creating deadly, antibiotic-resistant bacteria. You can’t visualize these places, you have to see them. The smell of excrement is overwhelming. The pigs who have an acute sense of smell can never escape. Ammonia fumes damage their lungs and, not surprisingly, many die of respiratory diseases.
Almost all mother pigs the breeding sows are kept in what are termed ‘total confinement facilities’. This innocuous term actually means imprisonment indoors and confined in metal crates just inches wider than their bodies. These desperate creatures can never walk or turn around for their entire lives. Total confinement is the fate of 83% of mother pigs, according to the USDA.
Transportation to slaughter is equally horrific. Often in open trucks, many die from heat stroke in the summer or freeze to death in winter. In 1998, nearly 277,000 pigs were dead on arrival at slaughterhouses.
And it doesn’t end there. Many pigs are inadequately stunned merely paralyzed so they feel all that happens as they are killed. Some are known to enter the scalding tank fully conscious and are literally boiled alive.PLEASE VISIT THE LINK ABOVE TO HELP.THE PIGS DESPERATLEY NEED YOU NOW!

Van needed for animal rescue [17 Feb 2004|02:14am]

yvesilena
Does anyone in London/South East England have a Transit-style van that they'd be willing to give or sell cheaply to a local animal rescue centre? I've just found a rather desperate-sounding advert in the local post office - apparently they've been financing this operation completely out of their own pockets for 30 years and they really, really need a van to enable them to continue rescuing animals. Please pass this on to anyone you know who might be able to help. Thank you :)

Famous Players [01 Feb 2004|10:32pm]

nikol41
The fur industry inflicts extreme and obscene cruelty upon fur bearing animals. Yet Famous Players has been running advertisements for furriers and the Fur Council of Canada at some of its theatres during the winter months since 2001. Despite public disapproval, Famous Players has only said that they have “no plans” to run these ads “in the future”. However, plans can change. Please ask Famous Players to revise their advertising policy so that they will never advertise fur products again. Ask your family, friends and co-workers to politely email Jeff Rush/sign http://www.skinned.ca/jeffrush.asp

Urge Your Senators to Support the Akaka Amendment!

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote in the next day or two on an amendment offered by Senator Akaka to protect downed animals. It is critical for animal advocates to contact their U.S. Senators to urge them to support the Akaka Downed Animal Amendment.

This amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill seeks to prevent the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) from approving meat from downed animals (animals too sick even to stand) for human food. It will abolish the market for downed animals, and it will provide the necessary incentive to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place. Approximately 90 percent of downed animals can be prevented with better care on the farm and during transit.

Downed animals suffer horribly. They are commonly dragged with chains or pushed with tractors and forklifts on their way to slaughter. Downed animals commonly languish for hours or days without receiving food, water or veterinary care, and many die of neglect.

Using meat from downed animals poses a threat to human consumers. Downers are among the most likely animals to harbor bacterial contamination and to be afflicted with various diseases, including mad cow disease.

Please contact your two senators NOW and urge them to vote YES on the Akaka Downed Animal Amendment!

Contact information for your senators is available at http://www.senate.gov.

i have a friend who has a beautiful, friendly, playful rottweiler *sp*.
seriously, he's not mean at all, he's the biggest sweet heart.
they don't take care of it.
it's not up to date on shots.
we think he has worms.
he has a ear infection.

he's outdoors, on a leash, day and night.
and he's in a far too small kennel for him in the winter.

and they refuse to take it to the vet.
she doesn't want to pay the "500 hundred dollar bill".
which it wouldn't be.

now, i honestly would have no problem going to her house and taking him.

i'm planning to take him to the vet, for a checkup.
to make sure he's ok.

**edit**

i asked her if she'd mind if i took him to the vet, she said she doesn't want me to.

she said her mom has an appointment for him.
heh, i called both vets in the area, and the dog hasn't had an appointment for a year and a half.

i told her she needs to keep him up on his shots, especially since he's outdoors, cause he could really easily get bit while sleeping or something by a rabid animal.

i also called her out her saying that he has an appointment.

i told her i already called the vets, they said he hasn't been there for a year and a half.

she said that's not true.

so i don't know.

i'm going to call the vets next week.
if he went, then i'll let it go.

if he hasn't, my other friend said that she would go over to the house and say she's taking the dog for a walk (she took him for walks all this summer, so they wouldn't suspect) and i'd take him the vet.

it just bothers me.

she'd save face rather than make sure her dog's healthy.

oh yeah, and they lied to the humane society's dog shelter, because that's where they got the dog, about him being inside.

they said he's inside all day and night, except for walks and potty breaks.

so if they fuck up at all, he's gone..

i just don't want him to go back to the shelther :(

..excuse my grammar, and the lack thereof.
and my run on sentences.

cold fingers, long day.

thanks.

Four elephants were taken from their native Swaziland to be part of a new "Safari Africa" exhibit arrived at Lowry Park in Tampa a couple weeks ago. The zoo also plans to use them for a breeding program. Earlier this we, in PETA, sued to try to block the zoos from importing the animals but the decision was overruled. So far, all of the protestors have been arrested. Student Organized Animal Rights is organizing a peaceful protest to try and make a difference. If you can help, please comment.

In addition, the exploitation of animals through the fur industry and Vogue is getting out of hand. The editor knows it's wrong but refuses to do anything about it. Do not let her get away with it-please send her letters and feel free to add all sorts of touches(previous protestors have sent dead racoons and remnants of her fur coat):
